EPISODE 1 RECAP

We open on a vast snowy field populated by one giant tree, as a lone figure leaves behind a plastic bag of clothing. Upon closer inspection, we also see that she’s abandoned an infant inside.

In a lavish penthouse, a scantily-clad couple lies entwined as OH SOO (Jo In-sung) smirks ruefully at a pair of dice he’s holding. In voiceover we hear him ask, almost defensively, “Can’t I just live half-heartedly like this? Does there need to be a reason for a person to live?”

The woman lying next to him, JIN SO-RA (Seo Hyo-rim) asks about his family, which sends us back in time to that snow-covered field as the mother of the infant runs away, followed by the baby’s cries. Ah, so that was him. Read More

EPISODE 2 RECAP

Lawyer Jang’s face lights up as soon as Soo claims to recognize him, though their lie of a reunion is cut short when Jin-sung arrives. Hah, it’s kind of cute that Jin-sung fawns over his hyung’s face before he’s ready to take down the ajusshi, thinking he’s responsible.

Soo eventually shuts Jin-sung in the apartment in order to keep him from spilling information that could ruin his newly-hatched plan, and Jin-sung rails against the door like a dog who’s just been locked up. Read More

The moment of truth comes as Young steps toward the oncoming train, but Soo springs into action by throwing his arms around her and putting his body in between hers and the train. No one’s hurt, but Soo is rattled as we hear his thoughts:

“I, who wants to live, met a woman who wants to die. We are clearly very different. But for some reason… at that moment, that woman seemed like me. For the first time, I became curious about that woman.”

Young returns to the basement to retrieve the bell that she technically won for herself at the carnival game (with Soo’s help, of course), but once she hears Soo hiding she demands whoever it is to come out.

Soo moves as if to step out, but stays silent instead. Perhaps thinking it was nothing, Young heads back up the stairs until Soo makes another noise. She turns sharply, but a stray kitten wandering in the room causes her to lower her guard enough to leave.

Soo thinks he’s off the hook – but Young should be smart enough to know that stray cats don’t pick locks.

Young maps out the contours of Soo’s face with her fingers, noting with a small smile that the bridge of his nose is high. Soo’s not in the mood.

Moo-chul figures out that Myung-ho is from PL Group, and doesn’t seem to be doing Soo any favors when he keeps reiterating to Young’s fiancé that that other Oh Soo he’s looking for is a con artist, gambler, all around bad guy, etc. Once again I ask: Does this guy want his money or not?

Once they’re in the car, Soo scolds Young until she breaks out in a fit of giggles, deducing that he must take after their mother with his incessant nagging. She seems so happy and carefree now… does she actually believe he’s her brother now? Read More

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Soo denies Young’s request to give her the Instant Death Pill: “Because there is only one of this in the world, and it’s not yours… it’s mine.” As in, Get your hands off my suicide method.

It isn’t long before Young asks to sleep in the same bed again, but Soo’s temper flares up at her insistence as he reminds her that they’re not kids that can sleep in the same bed. “Oppa is still a man, and a man has to be careful.”

Young actually takes this into consideration, and explains that she doesn’t see things the same way because time seemed to stop for her after they were separated. To her, he’s just her brother, nothing more. Read More

A tense moment passes as Soo and Secretary Wang just stare at each other, both of them weighing their options. (Admittedly, Soo’s options seem pretty darn slim right now.)

The moment is broken when Young asks if her oppa came – she can smell his scent in the room. Secretary Wang keeps her gaze locked with Soo’s as she lies to Young that he didn’t come, all while writing Soo a message he can read from her phone to escape while she uses music to mask the sound.

Jin-sung and Hee-sun prepare to leave town, banking on Soo’s success – but their bubbles burst when they find out he was caught instead. Read More

Soo and So-ra’s charged glance doesn’t last long, since he’s got to get Young to the hospital. So-ra is prevented from following by Young’s totally amazing fiancé, while Hee-sun witnesses it all before calling Jin-sung for backup.

Young gets rushed in for examination, with Soo frantically declaring guardianship over her. Jin-sung calls in the meantime about what to do with So-ra, but we don’t hear Soo’s instructions.

Myung-ho asks So-ra to point out the Oh Soo she dated from a picture showing both of them, and she points Friend Soo out as deceased before confirming Soo as the one she dated. Read More

EPISODE 9 RECAP

Soo finds Young trembling in pain as she clutches the suicide pill to her chest, desperate enough to take it if it will mean an end to her suffering. Soo tries talking her down the way you’d talk someone off a ledge, and uses the first opportunity he can to swipe the pill off the countertop and out of her reach.

Unfortunately for him she hears it drop, so he makes up an excuse while he opens up the capsule to dump its contents in an attempt to fool her into thinking she’s still taking the poison if she swallows the empty casing.

The look of betrayal and hurt on her face when she realizes what he’s doing (I’m sure she hears it) is almost frightening, and she crushes the empty pill to prove her suspicion. She totally knows, but doesn’t let him know that she knows by taking the not-a-pill in front of him. Read More

EPISODE 10 RECAP

The gangsters who accosted Young weren’t just random guys, as it turns out. They were acting under Moo-chul’s employ, and our resident terminally-ill baddie muses that Soo was one step ahead of him this time.

Unfortunately for him, the spurned gangster who’s sworn revenge on Moo-chul notices when he grabs his chest in pain.

Soo takes Young to a coffee shop to calm down, and she’s anything but calm as she accuses him of having fun while watching her fall into his trap. Did she seem pitiful when she was so happy to have her brother home? More importantly, why didn’t he give her the pill and kill her?

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Soo asks Young one more time if she wants to live, knowing that she does even though she’s too afraid to admit it. “No, I don’t want to live,” she says, and Soo takes that as his cue to leave. Is he trying to snap her out of it by threatening to abandon her?

Secretary Wang has been listening outside the door, and Young tries to beg her help to stop Soo. Hah. As if.

Young follows after Soo, pitifully crying out “Oppa, don’t leave!” as he drives away. She flashes back to crying that same thing as a child when her mother and brother left her behind. Gah, must this show make me shed tears so early in?

She stands there crying, which makes it weird to say that this is the Young I like best – stripped of all her pretenses and vulnerable, as opposed to cold and shut-off. (Even though it’s a semi-viable defense mechanism.)

As she starts shuffling back to the house, Soo returns. “Get in.”

Young is awake for the kiss, and through her very limited vision she sees Soo’s skin texture (and a scar, maybe?) – but there’s something more. She’s seen this scar before, one year ago…

She shuts her eyes before Soo notices, but he’s too overcome with the realization that the charade is coming to an end. So-ra’s threatening text message springs to mind, and he knows that everything will be revealed if he doesn’t do as she says. It’s all pretty much over, anyhow.

Soo records a video for Young in her mother’s basement room, fighting back tears the whole time. “If you’re watching this, you’ll know that I’m not your real brother,” he starts, having to pause the recording when his voice starts shaking too much.

He produces a photo of her real brother for the camera and introduces him as a kind and good man. “Your real brother loved you so much,” Soo ekes out. “So much.” Read More

While Young processes the earth-shattering revelation that the brother she thought she trusted was only lying to her, and that her real brother is dead, Secretary Wang and Soo continue their battle of wills none the wiser.

Despite admitting to being responsible for Young’s blindness due to intentional neglect, Secretary Wang is adamant that the surgery be performed on Young, since Sun-hee found an iota of optimism even with the failed simulation.

On that day, she expects Soo to leave empty-handed. The most she’ll do for him is tell Young that he didn’t take any money because he loved her.

The forced kiss ends, and both parties take a little time to be alone. Young demands that Soo call Lawyer Jang to come pick her up, but he turns off her phone instead. Since he’s got control, he mandates that they’ll be staying together tonight before they head back to Seoul tomorrow.

He urges her to curse at him in order to let her anger out, but she declines. In a carefully controlled voice, she admits that there were times she had fun after meeting him. “I can’t thank you. But I can understand you. It’s my fault, too. The moment I met you, my heart fluttered. I should have known then. I’m a fool, right?”

Soo tells her to stop trying to understand – after all, he can’t even begin to understand the pain she went through, whether it was her mother leaving, her father dying, or her love for a conman posing as her brother.

“But my love for you has always been true,” he adds.

Oooh, a twist! Turns out Moo-chul wasn’t stabbed, because he’s too legit to quit. Instead he grabs Gangster Wannabe’s knife by the blade and gives him the smack down, even going so far as to dislocate his would-be murderer’s shoulder.

Gangster Wannabe goes scurrying off with his tail between his legs just as Moo-chul collapses, spitting up blood from his stomach cancer. Jin-sung spots him while on his way to the hospital and starts to piggyback him the rest of the way, even though Moo-chul’s already got one foot in the other world as he mumbles, “Just leave me be…”
